The memory remains one of Blake Palmer’s most vivid from the 20 years he spent behind a camerait was the day he went from a television interview with a Liberal leader to a story about a homeless man. From the elegant politician’s home to a cardboard box in a back alley was quite a journey itself. But when Blake spoke to the homeless man, he was struck by how much he had in common with the wealthy politician. Both had fiercely independent spirits and each was determined to go his own way in life. What on the surface appeared to be a study in contrasts became one of similarities, and Blake emerged from the experience with a new take on the many complexities of the human character.
A World Perspective
As a professional cameraman, Blake had the opportunity to see the world from a wide variety of angles. From the time he spent working for television stations to his freelance work, Blake filmed everything from the destruction of a fire to the violence of a crime scene to the triumphs of the athletes in the Calgary Olympics. He filmed four Prime Ministers, thousands of sporting events and hundreds of celebrities. He witnessed the joy of success, the anguish of loss, the strength in teams and individuals, the sorrow of misled lives and the despair of the parents of a missing child. Through the lens of his camera, Blake gained a unique perspective of the worldone that continues to play a major role in his life.
A Natural Curiosity
Blake was born and raised in Calgary. The youngest of three boys, from an early age he demonstrated a natural curiosity about the world and the people in it. After completing his technical training in film, he embarked on a six-month journey that would take him across Canada to Europe and North Africa. “It was as much a lesson in self-sufficiency as it was an adventure,” he remembers. “I hitchhiked most of the time, so I met a wide variety of peopleand I learned I could handle all kinds of situations.” His travel broadened his perspective and proved exceptionally valuable to his work as a cameraman, where he demonstrated a talent for working with people in all kinds of situations. He was equally capable of setting them at ease and calming them in times of distress.
